Christmas Day Lunch 2011

On Christmas Day we once again provided Christmas lunch for over 30 local people who would otherwise have been on their own.

The Town Mayor kindly came along, chatted with our guests and wished everyone a Happy Christmas.

After lunch carols were sung and Santa came round with gifts. Everyone left with a mince pie which had been provided by the mayor, and a slice of a christmas cake donated by another supporter.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the day so successful.

Christmas Collection in Knutsford

On Friday 9th and Saturday 10th December members braved the weather for our annual street collection in the centre of Knutsford.
This year the public response was one of our best year's ever and we are very grateful to those who contributed to our total of £1519.

Walk in Tatton 30 October 2011

On 30th October a group of members and partners had a most enjoyable walk around Tatton Park finishing with lunch at the Angel Hotel.
The route was planned by members of our intrepid thursday walking group - and took in parts of the park that some of us had never visited before!

Planting Bulbs 14 October

Annual Charity Concert - 16th Sepember 2011

Knutsford Lions held their inaugural charity concert last year which was a great success and enabled us to donate £500 each to the East Cheshire branches of the Alzheimer's Society and Crossroads Care (for young carers).
This year's concert, on Friday 16th September at 7.30pm, will consist of popular classics performed by the Dell'Arte Octet, made up from players from the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra. The concert will be held at the Methodist Church, Princess Street, Knutsford and tickets are on sale at £8.00 each from:

President's Handover 31 July

On Sunday 31 July members, partners and friends gathered to enjoy a few hours of food and chat in a Knutsford garden. Outgoing President Alan thanked everyone for their support over his year and incoming President Mike Goldman promised an exhilarating forthcoming year!

A most enjoyable selection of food had been provided by various members and friends and it proved to be an excellent relaxed afternoon - with a little sunshine.

Victorian Street Fair 30 May

A bit of a damp start for the Mayor's tour of the street with our Lion President Alan and the May Queen, but it brightened up later and we had a high turnout of people throughout the event as usual - many thanks to those who once again supported our event in various ways, especially those who braved the early rain!

There were some smart Victorians out in force which brightened up the occasion.

Entertainment this year included puppet shows, live music group (Redwing) - who led a quick session of "Dancing in the Rain" , and roving musicians.

Pancake Race Sunday 6 March

Once again we were called in to help with marshalling - this time for a Pancake Race on the Moor.

The event was organised by Friends of the Moor and Knutsford Heritage Centre. Most of the official entrants were young children, but after a bit of persuasion there was a race for parents, and at the end there was a special race for the Lion marshalls - we had to scratch around to find some pans and pancakes, since we hadn't come prepared for that!!

We understand they plan to have another race next year.

Senior Citizens Variety Show - Sunday 13th February

This year's annual Senior Citizens Variety Show was held at the Knutsford Civic Centre on Sunday afternoon 13th February.

The main entertainment was provided by the Lions Youth Brass Band and the Opus 5 group of singers. Also featured were two sketches performed by members of the Knutsford Lions!

The Lions Youth Brass Band (based in Sandbach) is sponsored by several Lions Clubs in Cheshire and has excelled at many competitions since it was formed in 1989. They regularly perform at Charitable Events and proved extremely popular with a wide range of popular music (singalong encouraged) and several pieces featuring young soloists.

The finale featured Al Capone (who also wrote the script) with two attractive? young? ladies? and a group of gangsters recruited specially for the parts from Knutsford Lions. After many weeks of rehearsals, the excellent perfomance (at least we thought it was!) included singing and dancing and a comedy sketch associated with the themes of Chicago and St Valentine's Day - and raised much laughter from the audience! The cast have been granted a 12 month timeout in order to allow the audience to recover in time for next year's Variety Show!

Christmas Day Lunch

On Christmas Day we once again provided a traditional Christmas lunch at the Stanley Centre for around 35 people who would otherwise have been on their own. A band of merry Lions and friends brought people in from around Knutsford and nearby villages and helped with food preparation and serving as well as chatting to the diners - some of whom have enjoyed the lunch for a number of years.

The Knutsford Deputy Town Mayor, Stewart Gardiner and the Mayor's Consort, Jan Nicholson attended to wish everyone a Happy Christmas. Carols were sung and Father Christmas handed around gifts for everyone to take home.

Visit from District Governor

Our District Governor Lion Tony Gadsby attended the Club's Meeting on Wednesday 8 December at the Whipping Stocks Inn.

The meeting was chaired by Vice President Mike, who was standing in for President Alan (away on one of his well earned rest holidays - at least he felt it was well earned!)

DG Tony gave an inspiration talk and at the end presented one of his personalised banners. Mike was slightly less delighted to receive a copy of the new Lions Health and Safety booklet - but hey-ho that's the way of the world these days!

Knutsford Christmas Market

Lions had a stall at the special Christmas Market in Knutsford on Thursday 2 December afternoon/evening- it was a bit cold (see two hardy members above!) but there was a good attendance - we were promoting in particular the Lions Message in a Bottle. Bottles are available free via Knutsford Lions or from Rowlands Pharmacy in Canute Square.

At about 6.30 that evening about 20 club members were out helping with marshalling along the reindeer route - prior to the official switch on of the Town's Christmas Lights in Canute Square. The town seemed much busier than usual - so well done to the street market organisers who had brought in a wide variety of stallholders.

Charity Concert Friday 17th September

The Knutsford Lions organised an evening of "Popular Classics" on Friday 17th September at the Knutsford Methodist Church in Princess Street, Knutsford. This was the first of a planned series of annual concerts in aid of local charities - this year's beneficiaries being Cheshire East CrossRoads Care (young carers fund) and the Cheshire East branch of the Alzheimers Society.
The music was performed by Wirral Winds, a quintet formed from members of the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra.

The concert was well attended and much enjoyed and Lions donated £500 each to the two beneficiaries.

Bowls Social Evening 14 August

Members and friends enjoyed an evening of very amateur crown green bowling on Saturday 14th August. Many were all fingers and thumbs about the bias on the bowls. The weather was remarkably kind - no rain and quite a mild evening compared to some recently!
There was a break for chinese/fish and chip takeaway at about 8.00, to allow participants to recharge their batteries (or muscles etc.) and partake in further liquid refreshment.

Helping Event Mobility at RHS Show

For many years we have helped the Registered Charity "Event Mobility" at the RHS Show in Tatton Park. Event Mobility bring a large number of electric scooters and manual wheelchairs for hire by visitors to the show. This year we once again provided volunteers to assist each day with the issue and return of the scooters and wheelchairs.

And this year we were privileged to have a visit from our Town Mayor and Mayoress, who popped in for a bit of training and to have a quick trial scoot!

President's Handover

On Sunday 18th July the Club held a social to celebrate the changeover of Club President. Ian Young thanked the Club for their support over his past year as President and wished Alan Perrin well for his year, before formally handing over the chain of office.
Members and partners enjoyed an afternoon of wine and barbecue, and wine and chat in Alan's garden - and for a few brief periods even the sun shone on our new President!

Cranford Street Fair 31 May

This year our annual street fair took on a victorian theme. 2010 is the bi-centenary of the birth of our local celebrated author Elizabeth Gaskell - so this year it became the Cranford Street Fair. Many people dressed in victorian costume - some are shown on the collage above.
Thousands of people crowded into "Bottom Street" to be entertained by a trio of string instrumentalists, a sixteen year old flautist and a man of many talents including juggling, walking on stilts and balloon modelling, as well as visiting the wide variety of stalls, and sampling the wide range of refreshments available in the street and local hostelries etc.
Many complements were received from those attending, and charity and trade stallholders were united in expressing their delight as to the day's takings.
Nobody reported seeing the ghost of Elizabeth Gaskell during the day, but she was certainly there in spirit!

Senior Citizens Variety Show - 7th February

For many years the Lions have put on a Senior Citizens Variety Show on the first Sunday in February.

This year about 170 local elderly were entertained again at the Knutsford Civic Centre by a mixture of acts, ending with a special performance put on by the Knutsford Lions - picture above left shows an extract from the final rehearsal. The Lions this year presented a special "local" edition of "Roughly Come Dancing" featuring three dazzling couples meticulously selected from the local Club (actually the only ones prepared to do it!!). Voting was very tight from the judges, and the final verdict was given to the audience - the winners are shown above right - not the judges first choice, but hey-ho, what's new about that!

Other "more professional" (some members might disagree with that description?) acts were provided by the Celtica Irish Dance group, The Singing Waiters (complete with trays - very convenient for holding the scripts!), and a variety of songs with strange and varied instruments by the Corvus Folk Group.

A free raffle was held in the interval assisted by the Knutsford Town Mayor.

Early comments from carefully selected members of the audience indicated that the Show was one of our best!

Christmas Day Lunch

On Christmas Day we once again provided a lunch for local people who would otherwise have been on their own.

Around 40 people attended for a traditional three course lunch followed by carol singing and a visit by Father Christmas with gifts.

We were also very grateful to our Town Mayor Councillor Tony Want and his wife Councillor Jenny Want who came to add their best wishes to everyone.

Knutsford Street Collection

Reindeer Marshalling 25 November

The Town council arranged for reindeer to pull a sleigh again this year along King Street and Tatton Street to Canute Square as part of the Christmas lights switch on arrangements on Wednesday 25 November. Lions were out once again this year helping to marshall the intersections on the route the reindeer followed. Weren't we lucky with the weather!

Lions "Training" at Events

During the summer Knutsford Lions take a miniature train to various events to support local organisations.
On 9th August we were at the Childrens Adventure Farm Trust Open Day and Family Fun Day, when we were very busy - in the sunshine for once!
Youngsters (and adults) will also be available for "Training" (i.e. rides on train - free "training" stickers provided after rides!) at:
- Bank Holiday Monday 31 August Wilmslow Street Fair
- Saturday 5 September Radbroke Hall Fun Day
- Sunday 13 September Event in Bollington

President's Handover

On 18 July Ian Young took over as President for the coming year at Petty Pool, Sandiway.
He accepted the chain of office from last year's President Jane Webster, after the large gathering of members, family and friends had enjoyed a barbecue meal.
Ian praised Jane for her second term of office and presented her with gifts of appreciation for all her hard work.
Entertainment was provided by rides on the magnificent miniature railway system at Petty Pool.
One of the engines pulling the two sets of carriages was a colourful engine known as "Little Tom", and this particularly thrilled the young children who were present to enjoy the rides. Needless to say many of the grown ups also joined in!
